Assignment #2 (to be done in class on Wednesday, December 2)
Put a line between Assignment #1 and Assignment #2.
Read chapter two.
On your student page ABOVE assignment #1, choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
Find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
Write the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
In a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
"Nine little Indian boys sat up very late;
One overslept and then there were eight" This, along with the rest of the poem, could be foreshadowing that the people on the island will be gone by the end of the book. By the end of the poem, all the Indians are gone. I think the Indians stand for the people and soon they will be gone to. When Judge Wargrave says "There's a fly in the ointment",he is foreshadowing that something strange is going on on the island. He knows something is strange about his invitation but doesn't know what to think of all of it. When it says "Four little Indian boys going out to sea; a red herring swallowed one and then there were three", I think it is foreshadowing that there will be many twists and turns in the book. Something that throws the reader off is called a red herring. When the poem says that the red herring swallowed up the boy, I think it is saying that something that throws the reader off is coming up in the book. When the poem says "One little Indian boy left all alone; he went and hanged himself and then there were none", it mentions the name of the book. I think this means that there will be no people left by the end of the book.
Some good predictions. I like how you explained "fly in the ointment" and the reference to the 'red herrings'. These two phrases and their explanations showed that you know how a mystery works. Good job! Again, check for errors in spelling, punctuation and usage. Mrs. M

how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
A mystery story is different from a narrative because you can tell what is going to happen in the begining. It doesn't take all oof the twists and turns that a mystery does. In a narrative, the story is usually the way things would really happen with a few things the throw off the plot. In a mystery there are many things that throw off the plot and turn the story in a totally different direction.
how might the title be a clue to the story?
The title gives away part of the book because it is And then there were None. These makes me think that something is being slowly wiped out throughout the book. By the the end of the book there will probably be nothing left of whatever is being wiped out. Some good observations, but your answers need a good vacuum cleaner; they need to be cleaned up! I bet that if you reread your posts, you'd find most of your mistakes. Always read your answers before making them 'published'. Mrs. M
